Portrait of Andy Moses

Andy Moses (b. 1962) is an American abstract painter whose work explores the forces, rhythms, and visual phenomena of the natural world through the physical behavior of paint. Born in Los Angeles, Moses studied at CalArts with influential figures including John Baldessari, Michael Asher, and Barbara Kruger before moving to New York, where he worked with Pat Steir and began exhibiting in the emerging art scene of the 1980s. Over the decades, he has developed a highly individual form of process-based abstraction in which nature functions not simply as subject matter, but as a generative force within the painting itself.

Moses works with gravity, viscosity, chemical interaction, and carefully controlled flows of pigment, allowing the materials to produce complex formations that evoke oceans, geological strata, atmospheric light, and even cosmic space. His surfaces often seem simultaneously liquid and solid, microscopic and immense. Rather than depicting a landscape directly, Moses creates conditions through which paint begins to behave in ways that parallel natural processes, producing images that hover between abstraction and recognizable phenomena.

Moses is significant for expanding the tradition of process painting into a distinctive contemporary language that connects material experimentation with the experience of the natural world. His work bridges the conceptual rigor of postwar abstraction with an intensely sensory approach to color, light, and movement. In paintings that appear almost to form themselves before the viewer, Moses transforms the act of painting into an exploration of change, energy, and the underlying structures that shape both nature and perception.
