Venice to Jeju, curated by Gallery Chang

Shane Guffogg

Venice to Jeju traces a journey between two places shaped by water, light, and time. The exhibition continues a dialogue that took on particular significance in Venice in 2024, when Shane Guffogg presented At the Still Point of the Turning World – Strangers of Time at the historic Scala Contarini del Bovolo during the 60th Venice Biennale. Set within the architecture of a city where history, water, and reflected light constantly overlap, the exhibition brought together Guffogg’s long-standing investigations into time, perception, memory, and the unseen structures that connect them.

Guffogg’s paintings are built through countless translucent layers of oil paint, forming luminous networks of lines that appear to move between surface and depth. Their structures suggest repetition without rigidity and order without stillness. Light seems to pass through the paintings rather than simply fall upon them, allowing each work to shift according to distance, movement, and the surrounding environment. Through this process, abstraction becomes less an image than an experience—one that evokes the movement of water, the persistence of memory, and the nonlinear passage of time.

Venice offered a particularly resonant setting for this language. At Scala Contarini del Bovolo, a building carrying centuries of architectural memory, Guffogg’s paintings entered into conversation with the city’s layers of history and its constantly changing reflections. His Venice presentation also expanded beyond painting through The Sounds of Color, a multisensory component that explored relationships among color, visual structure, and sound, extending his investigation of perception across different forms of experience.

In Jeju, that conversation changes. The enclosed history of Venice gives way to an open horizon; canals and stone are replaced by ocean, volcanic landscape, wind, and shifting island light. The works retain the memory of their earlier context while entering a new environment with an entirely different rhythm. Lines that in Venice might evoke accumulated time and architectural history can be encountered in Jeju as currents, horizons, movement, and the continuous pulse of nature.

Venice to Jeju is therefore not simply the movement of artworks from one geographical location to another. It considers how the meaning of a painting can evolve through place—how a work carries the memory of where it has been while remaining open to where it arrives. Between Venice and Jeju, history and nature, memory and possibility, Guffogg’s paintings become part of an ongoing journey. They invite us to experience art not as something fixed in a single moment, but as something continually transformed by light, place, and time.
