Selected from Venice presents four representative works by Shane Guffogg, drawn from the body of paintings shown in his 2024 Venice exhibition, At the Still Point of the Turning World – Strangers of Time, at the historic Scala Contarini del Bovolo. Presented during the 60th Venice Biennale, the exhibition brought together twenty-one paintings created in dialogue with ideas of time, silence, perception, and memory.

For the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, four works have been selected to distill the spirit of that larger presentation. Rather than recreating the Venice exhibition, this selection offers a concentrated encounter with Guffogg’s visual language. Layers of translucent oil paint and interwoven lines create spaces that seem to shift between surface and depth, movement and stillness. His paintings resist a single point of focus; the eye moves through them continuously, following forms that appear to emerge, dissolve, and reappear.

Time is central to Guffogg’s practice. His Venice works were influenced in part by T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, particularly its meditation on past, present, and future as interconnected rather than separate states. Guffogg translates this idea into painting through repeated gestures and layered structures, allowing different moments to coexist within the same visual field. The result is an experience in which abstraction becomes less about form alone and more about duration—the time required to look, perceive, and return.

Placed within the architectural setting of Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, these four paintings enter a new context. Removed from Venice yet carrying the memory of that exhibition, they create a quieter and more intimate encounter with the ideas that defined it. Selected from Venice offers not a summary, but a distilled moment: four works through which the larger dialogue between light, time, memory, and perception continues in Seoul.
